📰 News we're reading

1. Shoal Creek Trail 'middle gap' project brings smoother ride to North Lamar (kvue.com) — Cyclists and walkers in Central and North Austin now have a smoother, safer connection along Shoal Creek Trail, thanks to a new "middle gap" segment by North Lamar between 29th and 31st streets. The project adds better sidewalks, a signalized crosswalk, and a median, and moves the city closer to a continuous 11-mile route from downtown to U.S. 183.

2. Several agencies respond to fire at Austin Country Flea Market near Manor (cbsaustin.com) — Emergency crews are battling a major structure and brush fire at the Austin Country Flea Market in Northeast Austin, near US 290, after flames broke out Sunday evening. A large column of black smoke and a burning tire pile drew multiple agencies, with two minor injuries reported and Austin-Travis County EMS providing treatment as officials continue containment efforts.

3. Lonelyland (do512.com) — Austin singer-songwriter Bob Schneider, longtime local favorite and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, is celebrated as one of the city's most decorated musicians. With more than 59 Austin Music Awards and a genre-blending style he calls "FRUNK," Schneider continues releasing albums, touring heavily, and growing a fan base that now stretches far beyond Austin.

4. These 7 massive factories are powering America's EV manufacturing boom (interestingengineering.com) — Austin's nearby Gigafactory Texas earns a prominent spot on a list of seven massive plants driving America's EV boom, thanks to its 10‑million‑square‑foot footprint and Model Y and Cybertruck production. The article compares it with other huge facilities from Georgia to California, underscoring how these mega-campuses, batteries included, are reshaping the country's auto industry and supply chains.

5. Meet Sarah Greene Reed (canvasrebel.com subscription) — Austin readers meet Sarah Greene Reed, a former South Austin creative and wedding venue owner who now organizes global alumni trips for the Rhode Island School of Design.
