📰 News we're reading

1. Austin police chief says feds have not turned over key evidence in ICE agent shooting probe (kvue.com) — Austin's police chief says federal authorities still haven't shared key evidence or access to an ICE agent involved in a Sept. 20 shooting after a North Austin traffic stop turned chase. She stresses APD is pursuing its own investigation and reassures immigrants in Austin that local officers do not ask about immigration status when they report crimes or seek help.

2. Beyond the front door: How trust gets UT students into healthcare (thedailytexan.com) — UT Austin students are increasingly turning to campus mental health services, but many—especially from immigrant and Asian backgrounds—still face cultural stigma and confusion about where to start. Peer-led programs like Longhorn SHARE, Wellness peer educators, and new outreach teams are working to bridge those gaps, using word-of-mouth and student ambassadors to guide classmates into confidential counseling and health resources available right on campus.

3. Pflugerville lottery player claims $1 million scratch ticket prize (star-telegram.com) — A Pflugerville resident just claimed a $1 million Ultimate Millions scratch-ticket prize after buying the winning ticket at a store on Harrisglenn Drive, about 15 miles northeast of Austin. The Texas Lottery notes the retailer may earn a bonus, and officials are reminding Austin-area players that confidential help is available for anyone struggling with gambling problems.

4. 2026 Michelin Guide Texas: Houston Adds 5 Bib Gourmands, No New Stars (houstoniamag.com) — Austin diners now have two newly starred Michelin restaurants to celebrate: Kappo Kappo in the Austin Proper Hotel and vegan tasting-menu spot Fabric. While this year's announcement focused heavily on Houston, the expanded Texas guide confirms Michelin inspectors are now regularly evaluating restaurants in Austin, helping raise the city's national dining profile and potentially drawing more visitors to local spots.
