Andy Roddick Foundation Partners with PwC to Teach Financial Literacy to K-5th Graders in Austin this Summer

Six-week Program at Pecan Springs Elementary Developed after Survey of Local Educators Identified Students' Need for Personal Finance Skills

This summer, the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF) partnered with PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) to teach financial literacy concepts to K-5th graders as part of the ARF summer learning camp. The six-week program was held at Pecan Springs Elementary school in Austin and was developed after a survey of local educators identified that students needed stronger foundations in personal finance, in addition to more opportunities to explore science and history.

At the camp, PwC volunteers provided age-appropriate lessons about money, savings and the importance of setting financial goals like saving for college. This year, volunteers used "decades" as their theme, teaching financial literacy topics (budgeting, saving, etc.) through a specific decade (1900s, 1910s, 1920s, 1980s, and the future) each week. "Using decades this year was a fun theme and it really helped the students stay engaged,” said Dana Read, PwC Partner. “The kids were excited about what decade was next.”

“When I was nine years old, I had a moment where I picked up a tennis racket and it first clicked with me––it built my self-esteem and gave me a sense of self-worth at a young age because I could do something well,” says Andy Roddick, founder of the Andy Roddick Foundation. “That’s the moment we’re trying to give our kids. And thanks to partners, such as PwC, we can give every child every opportunity to find their own moment. “
