Ascension Texas launches Medical Assistant Apprentice Program

New program will support and invest in the next generation of health professionals

Ascension Texas, in conjunction with the Texas Workforce Commission and Innovative Workforce Projects, is proud to announce it is offering a yearlong Medical Assistant (MA) Apprentice program. Launched September 12, this novel program was developed to support and invest in the next generation of health professionals and address the needs of our community by allowing individuals who have no experience in healthcare the opportunity to become medical assistants.

Six individuals have been selected for the inaugural cohort to become full-time employees with benefits and obtain on-the-job training to become Certified Medical Assistants. The first six months of the program will provide hands-on training including: simulation and skills lab time at the Ascension Clinical Education Center, classroom instruction, online learning, professional development and various clinical rotations through different specialties amongst Ascension Medical Group clinics. The second half of our program will allow the employee to take the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) exam, work with a recruiter to secure placement in a specialty they are interested in and to complete the six-month externship. At the end of the externship, the employee will have the opportunity to continue to work as a CMA and provide healthcare at an Ascension standard of excellence at the respective clinic (or can request a different placement at one of our many Ascension Medical Group clinics) for long-term employment.

Ascension will continue to grow this program and launch consecutive cohorts every quarter, each consisting of six individuals.
