Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) Austin-area groups hosting stair climb events to remember 9/11. In honor of the lives lost on 9/11, a variety of groups around the greater Austin area are hosting memorial stair climbs and events to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Head to KVUE to see a breakdown of where you can go to participate.
2) Over 20 local organizations have received grants to help them expand their services, improve equity and grow Austin's homelessness response system. On Friday, the City of Austin Homeless Strategy Division and Innovation Office announced that 21 local nonprofit organizations have been awarded contracts worth a total of $1 million to better address the homelessness crisis in Austin. Each of the organizations will receive up to $45,000 through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.
City of Austin Homeless Strategy Officer, Dianna Grey, tells KVUE: "In order for us to meet community goals around reducing homelessness, we are going to need the help of a broad variety of service providers, some of whom may not have been previously funded by the City of Austin. The awards provide targeted funding for service providers to help them scale up or improve services." KVUE has more on this story here.
3) Texas Longhorns fall 20-19 to Alabama. The University of Texas kicked a 49-yard field goal to go up 19-17 with 1:29 to play, but couldn't hold off Alabama as they fell 20-19 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Catch the full game recap here at Texas Sports.
