🌱 ATX's Unemployment Rate + Rail Suspension + Rudolph In Town 🦌

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Austin.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Austin! I hope everyone is managing to stay warm (and dry) this weekend. It's Jessica here in your inbox bright and early to get you caught up on everything you need to know about what's going on in town.

Cozy up while we cover:

  • The latest with Austin's unemployment rate.
  • Arrests were made in connection with a string of burglaries.
  • Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer is in town!

But first, today's weather:

Cloudy and cold with a shower. High: 48 Low: 40.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) What does Austin's flat 2.8% unemployment rate actually mean? As layoff announcements continue, interest rates rise, and the stock market struggles, many are left feeling uneasy about the future of our economy. The Statesman reports that Austin's "unemployment rate for October came in at 2.8%, according to data from the Texas Workforce Commission... That number is identical to September and a level that economists generally consider so low that it means most people who want a job have one." Also, a record 1.327 million people were employed in the Austin metro area last month — breaking the previous record of 1.319 million set in March and well above about 945,000 a decade ago. The Austin-area economy routinely outpaces its state and national counterparts. Head over to The Statesman for more on the short-term and long-term expectations for our local economy.

2) Transportation Alert: The CapMetro rail service is suspended through Nov. 27 for construction along the entire line. Head over to CapMetro's site to learn more about alternative routes and transportation options.

3) Get your cozy blanket and a good movie ready – the cold, rain is expected to continue through today. KVUE reports: "Temperatures on Sunday morning will be in the low to mid-40s as the precipitation moves in, so almost all of this falls as just cold rain, although most will see a dry but gloomy start to the day." Check out the weather play-by-play over at KVUE.

4) Four individuals have been arrested in connection with a string of storage unit burglaries across Austin. FOX 7 Austin reports: "Michael Dominic Ruiz, Daniel Gabriel Milner, Rex Daniel Fagile, and Renata Ava Shepherd were arrested. Police said they committed the burglaries over the last six months." APD is still working to identify the victims of the burglaries, but they believe there are well over 100 victims. FOX 7 Austin has more on this story here.
