Austin Community College Events For Dec. 9-15, 2019

From a commencement for a record-breaking number of students to a 'Brown Santa' event, much is happening at the school in the coming days.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin Community College hosts a series of community events from Dec. 9 through Dec. 15. Events include:

  • Austin Community College continues upward trend of record-breaking graduates: More than 3,200 students are invited to participate in the school's fall commencement 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, at Frank Erwin Center, 1701 Red River St. Graduation and completion rates at Austin Community College are up nearly 1,000 graduates from spring and up almost 52 percent over the past five years. The commencement ceremony honors those who have completed Austin Community College’s associate degree, certificate, and high school equivalency programs.   • January registration deadline approaching fast for Central Texas’ top industry: Space is filling up to register for spring classes in Computer Science and Information Technology. Major firms tell school officials they struggle to find the workforce with appropriate skills to fill technology positions. Right now, there are more than 8,100 positions open in Computer Science and IT, according to the Austin Chamber of Commerce.   • Building Bridges | Addressing the issue of equity: Austin Community College’s Office of Community Engagement invites students, staff, faculty, and the community to the monthly Building Bridges Event, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 13, at 1709 E. 12th St. Austin Community College's associate vice president of Community and Public Affairs Chris Cervini will host a conversation on ‘How is Community & Public Affairs Addressing Equity?’. The event is free and open to the public.
  • Hear from Austin Community College experts on maximizing your 2019 taxes: Less than half the seats for spring 2020 classes in the school's nationally recognized accounting program remain available. In the past few years, two Austin Community College accounting graduates received the Elijah Watt Sells Award. The prestigious award is presented to candidates who score above 95.50 across the four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination on their first attempt. Now, Austin Community College accounting professors are passing that knowledge on. Check out the top five ways you can still maximize your tax return for 2019.
  • Brown Santa Donations: Austin Community College will present more than 250 puzzles and games collected for the Travis County Sheriff Office’s Brown Santa program 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the Highland Campus Social Staircase, 6101 Highland Campus Dr. The annual gift drive supports families in need. The college has donated more than 28,000 items to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office Brown Santa Program since the partnership launch in 2009.
