Today's weather:
A shower in the morning. High: 82 Low: 65.
Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) First and foremost, I've got a roundup of November 2022 Austin election results. Our mayor's race is heading to a runoff in December, with Celia Israel and Kirk Watson battling to be Austin's next mayor. Israel and Watson will meet in the runoff election on Dec. 13. If you're a data visualization nerd like myself, you'll love this: KXAN built an interactive map that shows how each neighborhood in Austin voted in this race.
Austin voters also approved Prop A, the city's largest affordable housing bond – ever. Austin ISD's $2.44 billion bond package also passed, as did Austin Community College's bond package. As for the City Council race: "Harper-Madison, Ellis were reelected to Austin City Council, [but] Districts 3, 5 and 9 are heading to runoffs." (KUT). Lastly, KVUE has compiled a great report on the Texas House and Senate races – check it out.
2) Austin Police Department is seeking help from the community with identifying a suspect connected to two bank robberies. The catch? The suspect is on camera wearing a ... fake beard. Head over to KXAN to see the suspect's photo.
3) Austinites are seeing some relief at the gas pumps. The Statesman reports: "The average price in Austin has fallen 6 cents per gallon in the past week, and currently averages $3.09 per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, according to industry website GasBuddy...Prices in Austin are 11 cents lower than a month ago, but are 12 cents higher per gallon than a year ago, according to GasBuddy's survey of 830 stations in Austin." The Statesman has the full scoop.
4) A trial by jury is set to start in June 2023 for Kaitlin Armstrong, the Austin woman accused of killing a professional cyclist, Moriah Wilson. The judge presiding over the case also denied Armstrong's motion to suppress the affidavit and the statement she gave to APD. KVUE has more on this story here.
5) The longest-standing no-kill animal shelter in Austin celebrates its 70th anniversary, TODAY! Community Impact reports: "So much has changed over the past 70 years, but our mission to serve Austin's most vulnerable animals and the people who love them has not," said Katie Kennedy, director of communications at Austin Humane Society. Curious how you can support AHS? Year-round it accepts both monetary donations, as well as in-kind donations (food, bowls, toys, blankets, etc..) – head over to Community Impact to learn more.
