Austin Halloween Forecast: Cold, Wet And Windy

The week's lowest temperature is being forecast on Thursday night when 34 degrees is predicted, perhaps prompting more 'brrrs' than 'boos.'

AUSTIN, TX — Instead of saying "boo" this Halloween, some trick-or-treaters might be saying "brrrr" as the low temperature Thursday night is expected to be around 32 degrees with wind gusts only adding to the chill.

Adding to the ghoulish weather will be rain — including a pretty good chance for it on Halloween. Indeed, it's something of a frightful forecast as it relates to being outdoors asking for candy.

  • On Tuesday, showers and a possible thunderstorm are in the offing, according to the National Weather Service, with the chance of precipitation at 70 percent. The day is cloudy, with a high temperature of 61 degrees expected. Winds are calm, blowing in from the north/northeast at 5 miles per hour to 10 miles per hour.
  • The chance of rain remains at 70 percent on Monday night, with showers — and a possible thunderstorm — expected. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch are possible, with higher amounts possible amid thunderstorms. Winds will be negligible at 5 miles per hour.
  • Wednesday calls for showers and a thunderstorm too. The high temp is expected to reach near 61 degrees, with north wind blowing between 5 and 10 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation grows to 90 percent by hump day, with new rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • By nightfall on Wednesday, showers are likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m. The night is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a low around 39 degrees. North wind will be between 15 to 20 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 30 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent, according to forecasters.
  • And then Halloween arrives. Thursday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 54 degrees, according to forecasters. North wind will blow between 15-20 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 25 miles per hour.
  • Nighttime when the kids are poised to go to door to door for candy is when things get dicey. While skies will have cleared up by Thursday night, the low temperature is expected to dip down to 34 degrees. At least that's what was originally thought before meteorologists updated their forecast to predict a low of around 32 degrees. Wind will have calmed down by then (negligible at a predicted 5-10 mph), thankfully enough. But still, it's going to be chilly.
  • By Friday, things will have warmed up, with a high near 61 being predicted. North/northwest wind will be at a nearly imperceptible 5 miles per hour, becoming southeast in the afternoon. Friday night will be mostly clear with a low of around 40 degrees.

Hopefully a coat won't compromise costume aesthetics come Thursday. Maybe wrap the kids in blankets and they could go as burritos or pigs in blankets or kolaches. Get creative with the heavy garments, and make sure to take an umbrella along just in case.
