Austin Man Killed In Greece Died After Argument Over A Selfie: Report

Bakari Henderson, 22, asked to take a selfie with a waitress before up to 15 men beat him, killing him within 30 seconds of their attack.

AUSTIN, TX — The Austin resident beaten to death by an angry mob while vacationing in Greece was killed over a selfie involving a waitress, succumbing to his injuries within 30 seconds of being viciously attacked, according to a report.

Bakari Henderson, 22, of Austin was killed last weekend at a bar in Laganas, a tourist village located on the Greek island of Zakynthos. According to the Washington Post, an argument ensued after Henderson asked if he could take a selfie with a waitress at the bar. One of the men argued with the waitress over the proposed selfie before a fistfight broke out among customers and two bar employees, the Post reported.

Greek police spokesman Theodore Chronopoulos told the Post that surveillance video shows Henderson was fatally beaten in a span of just 30 seconds after the fight resumed outside the bar. "They kicked and punched him to his body and his head," the police chief told the newspaper. "His death came from hits in his head."

The newspaper also provided further details about the deadly encounter. The number of men simultaneously beating Henderson could have numbered up to 15, not the 10 that had previously been reported. Also, Henderson is said to have smashed a beer bottle on the table of a customer who struck him while still inside the bar arguing over the selfie, a departure from friends' accounts of him having been more passive during the encounter.

Nine men have since been arrested and charged with intentional homicide, Chronopoulos told the Post. All the suspects are believed to be of Serbian descent, including the 33-year-old suspect who got into an argument with the waitress over the requested selfie. The fight happened during a bar night meant to honor the Serbian heritage, according to the report.

Henderson attended Anderson High School through his junior year before graduating from Hyde Park Baptist High School in 2013, according to reports. He was enrolled at the University of Arizona at the time of the attack. Henderson also previously served as an intern in the office of Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, according to media reports.
