Teen Dies After Rescue From Austin Pool Despite Valiant Bystanders' Efforts To Save Him [UPDATED]

Fellow swimmers furiously tried saving Anthony Dorsett, 17, of Harker Heights, after pulling him from the water but he died the next day.

Updated: Despite the valiant efforts of bystanders who tried to save his life, the young man pulled from the water at Hamiton Pool over the weekend has died. The victim actually passed away this past Saturday -- the day after he was pulled from the water after failing to resurface -- and he has been identified.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as Anthony Dorsett, 17, of Harker Heights, Texas. He had been airlifted by STAR Flight to University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he later died at 6:54 a.m. on Aug. 13, a TCSO spokeswoman said in an email to Patch.

"The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the manner of death accidental and the cause of death anoxic encephalopathy, which is associated with freshwater drowning," the sheriff's spokeswoman said.

AUSTIN, TX -- EMS officials are crediting bystanders with helping save the life of a teenager who was pulled from a body of water after nearly drowning on Friday.

Austin-Travis County EMS officials responded to the Hamilton Pool after reports of a teenage male experiencing difficulties. Medics treated the teen on the scene before he as airlifted by STAR Flight to University Medical Center Brackenridge.

But the actions of bystanders in performing CPR on the victim prompted EMS officials to stray from their usual recitation of facts in updating their activities on Twitter. Instead, they added a line giving the citizen life savers their due.

"It truly is a chain of survival!" EMS officials tweeted after describing the rescue. "Learn CPR. Save a life!"

The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. at the naturally fed Hamilton Pool. By the time medics arrived, bystanders had begun efforts to resuscitate the teen. The young victim was swimming at Hamilton Pool when he failed to resurface.

The teen was described as being in critical condition, but with a pulse.
