🌱 Austin No. 2 Best Performing City + Oakwood Cemetery Session Study
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Austin.

Good day, people of Austin! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the Austin Daily.
First, today's weather:
Clouds giving way to some sun. High: 84 Low: 61.
Here are the top stories in Austin today:
- According to "the Milken Institute's Best-Performing Cities report for 2022," Austin ranks No. 2 on their list. The report based the rankings "on various metrics, including jobs, wages, salaries, and technology output," and noted that "Austin has had significant growth in the tech sector and has an exceptional talent base to pull from." For the complete report, please see Best-Performing Cities US 2022.pdf (milkeninstitute.org) and visit: (Patch Release Desk)
- The staff at Oakwood Cemetery Chapel is looking for "descendants of people of color buried in the Oakwood Cemetery to participate in a vision session and help create a digital 3D model of the thousands of unmarked graves." The purpose of the project is to "provide public recognition of the men, women and children buried here who are tagged or geolocated to the burial section." Tara Dudley, University of Texas professor and architectural historian, said, "A lot of the empty space that you see here is not because there aren't individuals interred there. There likely are and we just don't have markers for those persons." According to the staff, there are 300 markers at the cemetery, "but more than 2,700 people are buried there." Dudley believes that there are "people of marginalized communities whose histories are continually erased or covered up in the historical narrative." She said, "It's important to understand the past so that we can understand the present. I feel like the ancestors, you know, are speaking and they want their stories told."
