Man In Wheelchair Killed While Crossing Street Identified
56-year-old pedestrian was killed last week trying to cross South Congress Avenue at night in an area where there is no crosswalk.
AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday provided details related to the death of a pedestrian in a wheelchair who was killed trying to cross South Congress Avenue last week.
The incident occurred just after 10:30 p.m. along the 5700 block of South Congress Avenue on July 25, police said in a press advisory. That's where Felix Ybarra, 56, was attempting to cross the street in an area where there is no crosswalk, according to police. He was struck by a maroon, 2013 Kia Sorrento before being rushed to St. David's South Austin Medical Center where he died five days later.
Police noted the driver remained on the scene to cooperate in a police investigation. The motorist showed no signs of intoxication or other impairment, police noted.

The incident marked the city's 45th fatal traffic crash of 2019, police said, resulting in 46 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, there were 37 fatal traffic crashes and 38 traffic fatalities in Austin, officials added.
