$1 Million Mega Millions Ticket Sold In Austin Still Unclaimed

Someone bought a Mega Millions ticket in December that matched five of the six winning numbers, good for a nice-sized prize.

AUSTIN, TX — There's a person in Austin who is $1 million richer but has only until end of business today to claim the money.

That person bought a Mega Millions quick pick ticket in December that matched five of the six drawn numbers, KXAN reported. The Mega Millions game was purchased Dec. 1 inside the Valero convenience store at 4600 W. William Cannon Dr., according to the Texas Lottery Commission. With five of the six numbers matched, the ticket is worth $1 million.

But remarkably, the person who bought it has yet to claim it. There's still time to do so, but not much: The deadline to claim the winnings is Wednesday, May 30, by 5 p.m.

The winning numbers when the ticket was purchased were: 16-22-40-41-59 with Megaball 8. The holder of the ticket with five of six numbers needs to sign the back of the ticket, and head to the Texas Lottery Commission headquarters at 611 E. 6th Street quick. The telephone numbers is (512) 344-5252.

It's a mystery why the person who bought that ticket hasn't claimed it yet. Perhaps the person lost it. Or maybe the person owns one of those elusive money trees like the one pictured above. Or the person might already be so wealthy to the point where he or she can't be inconvenienced to cash a ticket for such a paltry amount.

But $1 million is nothing to sneeze at. If one were to put that amount in a savings account paying a mere 5 percent, it would earn $50,000 — pretty nice walking-around money if you ask us. The nice thing about compound interest is that if the person left the interest in the account, it would earn interest on top of interest, yielding $52,500 the following year.

So search all your pockets! Check the sofa cushions! Check the bottom of your purse or those slots in the wallet no one ever uses! Maybe you used it as a bookmark!. Heck, check under the furniture. You might already be a millionaire!
