Bicyclist Killed In South Austin Collision Identified

Incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on Aug. 23 at South Interstate 35 headed southbound on the East Ben White Boulevard service road.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday released details on a traffic accident last weekend that left a bicyclist dead.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at South Interstate 35 headed southbound on the East Ben White Boulevard service road.

A preliminary police investigation found that the bicyclist was riding eastbound on the Ben White Boulevard service road when he ran a red light and crossed over into the southbound lanes of the South I-35 service road. The driver of a silver, 2017 Chevrolet Cruze was driving in the far left lane of the IH-35 service road when she saw the bicyclist enter the intersection.

Police said the woman honked to alert the bicyclist while attempting to stop in time to evade him before he crashed into her vehicle. The bicyclist was transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. The driver remained on the scene, police said, and not charges are expected to be filed.

Police identified the bicyclist as Anthony Wayne Washington. He was 36 years old.

The incident marked Austin's 52nd fatal traffic crash of 2019, police said, resulting in 54 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, there were 43 fatal traffic crashes and 44 traffic fatalities, police said.
