AUSTIN, TX — The Austin Police Department on Monday warned the public about counterfeit pills that are being distributed in Austin.

These pills contain unknown amounts of illicitly manufactured fentanyl, police said, making them extremely lethal. Moreover, police said they have investigated at least five overdose deaths in the last two weeks that may be associated with these pills.

The Austin Police Department warning comes three days after Williamson County reported a nearly five-fold increase centered on counterfeit pills there. At least one of the pills tested positive for fentanyl, officials said.
