Austin Prepares For National Night Out
Residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with neighbors and first responders.
AUSTIN, TX — Residents are encouraged to come together on Tuesday for this year's National Night Out to stand in solidarity against crime.
During the event, residents are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with neighbors, police officers, EMS and fire fighters. In a press advisory, Austin Police Department Chief Brian Manley released his itinerary as he drops by some of the neighborhood gatherings.
From 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Manley is scheduled to be at the Santa Rita Courts, 2341 Corta St. Then, from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., the chief is scheduled to be at Chalmers Court, 1654 E. 3rd Street

National Night Out is designed to generate support and participation in crime prevention efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and the relationship between the community and law enforcement. "Together, we can let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back," police said.
National Night Out is scheduled the first Tuesday in October each year, the entire nation recognizes national night out. In communities throughout America, block parties take place and information is presented on crime prevention and safety awareness. Last year, police said, more than 450 parties took place in Austin. Police officers, firefighters and EMS visit as many of these parties as possible sharing with the neighbors and learning from each other and sharing ideas.
