Austin Restaurant Offers Free Margaritas For Teachers

El Arroyo — known for tasty Tex-Mex and hilarious marquee signs — offering complimentary concoction on last day of school before summer.

AUSTIN, TX — El Arroyo restaurant — the eatery known as much for its delicious food as the comedic marquee with often pun-heavy social commentary — plans to thank teachers on the last day of school with a special gift: A free margarita.

On May 30, the Tex-Mex eatery at 1624 W 5th St. is teaming up with 512 Tequila for the complimentary concoctions as a way to thank teachers readying for a much-needed summer break. In that relaxed, let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may sort of way they approach their guffaw-inducing placard philosophy, there appears to be no big rigmarole involved for teachers to get their drink on. But we'd suggest educators availing themselves of the free drink to take along their teacher ID cards to be safe.

This is the extent of the information on the giveaway, offered up in El Arroyo's preferred mode of communication:

Other marquees have offered funny stuff over the years for patrons and passersby alike. So many humorous pearls of wisdom have been posted, there's even an El Arroyo signs Facebook page to peruse their greatest hits. The signs are so prolific, they were recently compiled in book form.

Here are some of our favorite merry marquees from the recent past:

They got a million of 'em, folks, a very public stream of consciousness (appropriate for an establishment with a name that means "the stream" in Spanish). For those wanting more, El Arroyo’s Big Book of Signs: Volume One is currently available on the restaurant’s online store for $24.99. Also offered is a 10-book or 20-book gift set to give the book out to friends and family members.

The need for comedy is especially needed today. One might say it's a sign of the times (do you see what we did there?).
