Austin Seeks Lifeguards, Saying Pools Might Not Open On Time

Hiring Day scheduled on Tuesday, May 14, seeks to fill positions starting at $15 an hour to avert pools' opening ahead of swimming season.

AUSTIN, TX — Calling all lifeguards! Austin Parks and Recreation officials on Monday said some pools may not open on time for the summer if they don't receive more work applications for lifeguard positions.

To ensure prompt opening of all municipal pools, the department's Aquatic Division is issuing a call for more lifeguards during a hiring day scheduled on Tuesday, May 14. The upcoming event will provide potential lifeguards, cashiers, swim instructors and swim coaches a one-stop-shop for summer employment, with jobs starting at $15 per hour.

The Aquatic’s Hiring Day is scheduled on Tuesday, May 14, at the Aquatics Administration & Training Center, 2818 San Gabriel St., from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. During the event, the lifeguard certification registration fee of $40 will be waived (a $200+ dollar value) to provide even more applicants with access to summer jobs while helping the city increase the pool of applicants.

"Summer Aquatic jobs are a great way to earn money, meet people, and learn new skills!" city officials said.

To sweeten the deal, free pizza and snacks will be provided during the hiring event. Applicants between the ages of 15 and 16 must have a parent present during the interview. Applicants that are 17 years-old need parent signature(s) on the applicant paperwork.
