AUSTIN, TX — Oct. 4, 2019, is a day of reverence for many of us in commemorating one of the world's greatest contributions to mankind. Tomorrow is National Taco Day, and aficionados all over town are hopping with excitement at various offerings specially offered to mark the happy day.

Speaking of hopping, La Condesa in Downtown's 2ND Street District is rolling out a secret, off-the-menu taco for the more adventurous foodies planning to celebrate this most special occasion. Executive Chef Rick Lopez serves up a uniquely crunchy taco to diners in the know — the taco cognoscenti, if you will — that isn't listed anywhere on the menu.. Yet adventurous (and decidedly savvy) guests request them by name with not so much as a "psssst" to get the server's attention.

They are chapuline tacos. In plain English for our Spanish-challenged friends: Chipotle-spiced grasshoppers (chapulines), toasted and served on homemade corn tortillas with avocado purée, epazote, lime juice, and two different salsas. So hop on over to La Condesa to try this delicacy in honor of National Taco Day.

You read that right: Grasshoppers! Don't knock it 'til you try it. Also: ¡Que viva el taco!

For the less adventurous wanting more mainstream fare, there's Torchy's Tacos, hosting all-day happy hours at locations with full bars in Austin AND San Antonio on Oct. 4. Drink specials include $1.50 off draft and bottled beer and $2.00 off fresh-squeezed margaritas and signature sips.

In addition to the all-day happy hour event, one dollar from every Trailer Park taco ordered that day will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The fun doesn’t stop there, officials noted in a press advisory. Be sure to follow Torchy’s Tacos on social media (see here, here, and here) for a chance to win prizes throughout the entire day.

And because your visit to Austin City Limits isn’t complete without stuffing your face with queso and Damn Good tacos: Torchy’s will be serving up fan favorites as an official vendor both weekends of this year’s festival. In addition, Torchy’s Tacos’ iconic food truck will be parked at Pecan Grove RV Park serving up Damn Good tacos (and times).

As if that weren't enough, Torchy’s will also be offering late-night ordering (until 1 a.m.) through the DoorDash app during both weekends of the festival.

Another popular chain, Taco Cabana, won't be left behind in its commemoration. What's more, the Tex-Mex chain will thrown in another splash to the festive vibe concurrently celebrating vodka as Friday also is National Vodka Day.

Taco Cabana will be offering $1 tacos all day and specials on its Tito’s Handmade Vodka beverages all day long! Here's the scoop:

  • National Taco Day (10/4): Purchase any breakfast taco, naked taco (chicken, steak or brisket – no toppings), shredded chicken taco or ground beef taco for only $1 per taco all day long. Please note this offer is valid at participating locations only on October 4th, is limited to three (3) tacos per guest, and is not valid through DoorDash.com or the DoorDash app.
  • National Vodka Day (10/4): $3 Frozen Witches Brew and $1 Tito’s shots all day long. This offer is valid for dine-in guests only ages 21+ and is limited to two (2) per guest, per transaction. TC encourages all guests of age to drink responsibly.

It's also worth noting that Taco Cabana is donating $1 of each item sold in October to Susan G. Komen, the nation's largest breast cancer organization. Way to go, TC! We'll toast to that (with some refreshing Tito's Handmade Vodka adult beverages, of course).
