Bicyclist Near Death After Being Struck By Suspected Drunk Driver In Downtown Austin

The cyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after being hit by car involved in a wreck with another vehicle near 6th Street, police said

AUSTIN, TX — A bicyclist was hospitalized following a Thursday morning crash in downtown Austin that was blamed on a driver arrested on suspicious of driving while intoxicated, police said.

The incident occurred near North Lamar and 6th Street shortly before 1 a.m., KVUE reported. A van and SUV collided at the intersection, causing one of the vehicles to strike the cyclist, according to the report.

The cyclist as rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the passengers in the vehicles sustained no injuries. One of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of DWI, police said.

The road was closed for some time while police investigated and work crews cleared the scene before being reopened later that morning.
