Body Found At Southwest Austin Homeless Encampment

Police were alerted to the death by Sunset Valley counterparts, and found a trauma-riddled body in woods inhabited by homeless people.

AUSTIN, TX — Austin police are investigating a suspicious death after a man was found deceased at an area homeless encampment in a wooded area on Sunday morning, officials said.

Officer Bino Cardenas briefed reporters during an afternoon press conference, saying the local police department was notified of the death by the Sunset Valley Police Department. Officers there said a person alerted them a man was dead at the site along the 5900 block South Mopac Expressway.

Upon arrival, Austin police found a body with obvious trauma. Cardenas described the site as a large homeless encampment located in a wooded area. The officer said police were expected to remain at the scene for up to four hours as they gathered evidence and interviewed possible witnesses.
