AUSTIN, TX — A suspected burglar was shot dead by police after a confrontation Friday morning, officials said.

The male suspect, described only as Caucasian, is accused of having entered the home along the 4500 block of Avenue G early Friday, prompting its occupants to hide in a closet after calling 911 police at around 3:40 a.m., the assistant police chief explained in a subsequent press briefing with reporters.

Two officers arrived to the scene, later saying the suspect shot at them — forcing them to return fire, according to the police. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
