Capital Metro Offering Free Rides New Year's Eve to Discourage Drunk Driving

If you find yourself tipsy when it's time to go home on New Year's Eve just hop on a Capital Metro line for free.

DOWNTOWN AUSTIN-UT, TX - New Year’s Eve can get wild, and if you get a little carried away this year Capital Metro will help you get to your destination safely and for free.

Starting at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Capital Metro will be offering free rides on its MetroRail, MetroBus, and MetroRapid.

“We’ll be your designated driver. Leave your car at home and ride for free with CapMetro on New Year’s Eve from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Special extended MetroRapid and MetroRail service runs until 2:30 a.m., and Night Owls run until 3:00 a.m,” Capital Metro announced.

There will be five Night Owl routes that run from Sixth and Congress every 30 minutes from midnight until 3a.m. E-buses and UT Shuttles will not be in service Thursday, KXAN reported.

“People save money on parking fees as well as surge pricing on some of the alternative services during this time,” Amy Peck, Capital Metro Spokeswoman, told KXAN.

Those who are too drunk to drive but don’t want to leave their car downtown can call the service Sober Monkey Which sends two people out, one to drive the customer’s car with the other following behind.
