Central Texas Blood Bank Experiences Critical Donations Shortage

A string of traffic accidents across the We Are Blood 10-county region has led to low blood levels, especially 0 negative and 0 positive.

AUSTIN, TX — We Are Blood — the nonprofit community blood center serving more than 40 hospitals and medical facilities in Central Texas — is experiencing a critical shortage in blood donations after a string of serious traffic accidents resulting in patients in need across the 10-county service area.

Blood bank officials said inclement weather and allergies have led to a lowered level of blood donations. As a result, the blood bank is now especially in need of O negative and O positive donors to ensure patients can receive life-saving care.

Blood donations can be made at any of three donor centers on North Lamar, in Round Rock and South Austin. We Are Blood also hosts regular mobile blood drives. Donating whole blood generally takes less than an hour and appointments can be made any day of the week. Check locations for hours and days of operation.
