Common Misconceptions People Have About Health, Fitness and Weight Loss

Expert tips from Texas health and lifestyle coach Tiana Thompson

Getting into better shape and experiencing an ideal body weight is at the top of most people’s to-do list. Battling weight gain (and the subsequent problems that can possibly follow from carrying excess weight) can seem to be a daunting task. Some may even lose motivation because they feel like it may be too difficult, or they’ve been told information that isn’t quite true, at least for their body type. We asked fitness educator, public speaker and personal trainer Tiana Thompson to shed some light on the common misconceptions regarding getting into better shape, and you may be surprised at what she had to say.

Myth: I Must Stop Eating All the Foods I Enjoy

This is an absolute deal-breaker for some people. Truthfully, people simply don’t want to give up their favorite foods, or they may feel like they actually can’t. Fortunately, you don’t have to because this is just not true.

If you like cakes and cookies, or pasta and bread, the only thing you would have to change is the versions of the foods you eat, not the foods themselves. There are always healthier alternatives available, and I don’t mean just vegan or vegetarian options. For example, look for products that use raw cane sugar instead of the highly-processed regular granulated sugar. Another alternative would be to cease using iodized table salt and begin using pure sea salt, instead.

“The skill and intention when prioritizing where ingredients and products are sourced is huge”, Ms. Thompson explains. “I’m an advocate for promoting local produce, meat and dairy first!”

Myth: It Worked For Them, So I’ll Just Do What They Did

It is important to remember that everyone’s body responds to food and metabolizes nutrients differently.

Health, wellness and fitness are not just about eating healthy and working out. There are so many implications to the holistic picture of health; mental and emotional, physical, spiritual, and environmental. Fitness, lifestyle, and wellness are all separate, individualized aspects of one’s well-being.

“What works for one person may not work for another, necessarily” Tiana advises. She continues: “In our world of influencers and photo editing, the eyes can be deceived when it comes to how certain aspects of health and fitness are achieved when looking online. Be cautious here. I don’t copy and paste programs to people. My clients will receive individualized programming and nutrition as needed.”

Myth: I Can Do It All On My Own

It is important to stay consistent when you resolve to lose weight or get into better shape. While it is true that health, fitness, and wellness are personal journeys, there will be times when you’re just not motivated to jog, or times when you want to indulge in that triple-decker bacon burger. Having adequate support through these times can help you stay on track and keep you from losing any progress that has been made. Someone holding you accountable, someone cheering you on or someone actively participating in your fitness goals with you can make all the difference.
