The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Austin.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Austin! Let's get you all caught up to start this Thursday, March 31, off on an informed note. These are the most important things going on today in Austin.

First, today's weather:

Sunny and pleasant. High: 81 Low: 53.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

  1. Big Medium and Desert Door Texas Sotol announced an open call for the second annual Desert Door Residency "earlier this year," and recently three winners were announced, and all of them are from Austin! The local artists are Jieun Beth, Elizabeth Hudson, and Jesus Treviño, who "will each receive a $1,000 stipend and complete a one-week residency at the Desert Door ranch in West Texas." In addition, a group exhibition of their work "will be held in November during the city-wide Austin Studio Tour event." For more information on each of the artists, please visit: (Glasstire)
  2. Two new restaurants, The Grey Market Austin and The Diner Bar Austin owned by Mashama Bailey and John O. Morisano, opened up in downtown San Antonio recently this spring. The Grey Market "is a fast-casual lunch counter spot that offers grocery provisions as well as grab-and-go items like po' boys and fried chicken." The Diner, which originally opened in Savannah, "features dishes such as of whole roasted king salmon burnished with a sunflower seed puree, as seen at the original," but "recalibrated with redfish and the prickly heat of chiles at its Austin outpost." The Grey Market opens daily from 7 a.m.-7 p.m., and The Diner Bar opens Monday-Sunday with breakfast hours from 7:30-10:30 a.m., dinner from 5-9 p.m. and happy hour is from 4-6 p.m. Both venues are located at 501 Brazos St. For more visit: (Austin Monthly)
  3. "SALON TODAY, the leading business media for salon and spa owners," recently named Harlow Beauty and Hair Salon, located at 6009 Burnet Road, one of the SALON TODAY 200 businesses! SALON TODAY 200 is "a landmark competition that gathers data on industry performance, creates a forum for owners to share best business practices and celebrates salons for their business acumen." The focus this year was "on business recovery in 2021 and rebuilding efforts for 2022," due to the difficulties that small businesses faced for the past two years as a result of COVID-19. In February, this year's honorees were announced on SALON TODAY's eblast and social media announcements, and they were also featured in its spring 2022 publication issue. On Sunday, May 15, "the honorees will be celebrated in Nashville... at an awards dinner during Data-Driven Salon Summit, a peer-driven, hands-on experience that provides insight on data benchmarks and best practices to help salons identify new business opportunities."
