🌱 Drafthouse United Union + Cool Roofs' Praises + Blue Starlite

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Austin.

(Patch Media)

Happy Wednesday, people of Austin! These are the most important things happening in Austin today.

First, today's weather:

Breezy with a shower or two. High: 76 Low: 56.

Here are the top stories in Austin today:

  1. On Monday, Feb. 14, Drafthouse United group of workers at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse "announced a union, citing their interest in changes to wages and benefits and more clarity around COVID-19 health policies." The group seeks "to represent everyone who works at the venue level, excluding salaried managers, and some workers who have gone public with their support include a server, a bartender, a runner and a supervisor." The employees feel burnt out and are frustrated that Drafthouse workers in Texas are allegedly paid more per hour in other states due to "varying state laws." By unionizing, they hope "to make improvements to wages and benefits including paid sick leave, get more clarity on COVID-19 policies and reach 'a resolution to long-standing building maintenance requests.'" 2. Austin Roofing – Cool Roofs Inc., located at 2506 S Lamar Blvd., Suite B, recently received high praises from their customers. The company offers "a range of roofing and home improvement services, including commercial roofing, solar installation, military roofing, residential roofing, commercial painting and siding installation and repair" in most major Texas regions. It is "rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and has earned the recognition of being in the Top 100 roofing and property storm restoration companies in the country." Aaron Werlein, a customer, said, "Cool Roofs Inc. is the best roofing company hands down in Austin, Texas. The knowledge, customer care, quality and timeliness of everything is A-class. Not to mention, the inspection and estimate provided is free! Would recommend Cool Roofs Inc. to anybody!" For more information about the company, contact Hudson Whitten at 512-517-9633 or at hudson@coolroofs.co." (Digital Journal)
  3. The Blue Starlite Drive-In in Austin has a new location at 12709 N. MoPac Expressway by The Domain, and although tickets for the soft opening on Friday, Feb. 18 are already sold out, more dates are already set. The Tiki-themed outdoor cinema has partnered with Garbo's, a local lobster roll and seafood restaurant located at the same spot as the drive-in. According to a Blue Starlite announcement, "This unique collaboration offers a retro experience reminiscent of a beachside summer vacation movie night."
