Elderly Austin Hiker Dies At Big Bend National Park

According to press advisory, 73-year-old man collapsed and stopped breathing near Emory Peak Trail Junction in the Chisos Mountains.

AUSTIN, TX — An Austin biker died at Big Bend National Park over the weekend, according to a press advisory from the National Park Service.

Big Bend National Park rangers were notified at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday that a man had collapsed an stopped breathing near the Emory Peak Trail Junction in the Chisos Mountains, according to the advisory. The unidentified man from Austin was reported to have been 73 years old.

According to the Big Bend National Park press release, passersby administered life-saving techniques in efforts to save the man's life before arrival of medics. In the end, however, the efforts proved futile.

“Big Bend National Park staff and partners are saddened by this loss,” acting Superintendent Tom VandenBerg said in a prepared statement. “Our entire park family extends sincere condolences to the hiker’s family and friends.”
