Here are the top stories today in Austin:

1) The City of Austin will hold pop-up events to help residents prepare for emergencies and disasters before they happen. As the weather continues to be unpredictable, these events are designed to make sure community members have the information and resources they may need to safely survive a disaster. FOX 7 Austin reports that events will be held in each district of the city to ensure that residents are privy to geographical risks specific to their area. The first event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at the Howson Branch of the Austin Public Library from 4-7 p.m. FOX 7 Austin has the full schedule and more information about the events here.

2) St. David's Healthcare welcomed the first baby of the new year at 12:29 a.m. Gianna Muhimbare, born to mother Raissa Muhimbare, slid in on New Year's Day weighing 8.4 pounds. KVUE has adorable photos of Gianna and Austin's other first babies in 2023, arriving in style – check them out!

3) Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS) responded to a collision on East Riverside Drive and Alameda Drive early on New Year's Day. ATCEMS reported that a total of eight people were involved in the accident. KVUE reports that of the eight involved, four were transported to hospitals in the area. The other four patients had minor injuries and declined EMS transport. KVUE has more on this developing story here.

4) Local sweet treat staple, Gourdough's Donuts, reported that their Airstream trailer was stolen from a storage facility in Bastrop County over the Christmas weekend. The Gourdough's Team is asking anyone who may have information to contact the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office and to message Gourdough's for a cash reward. KXAN has more on this story here.

5) The Friends of Barton Springs Pool Polar Bear Club hosted its annual "Polar Bear Plunge" to ring in the New Year.
