Here's Your List Of I-35 Lane Closures For Oct. 6-12, 2018

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Nobody needs to tell you that driving along Interstate 35 can be a bear. You live it on your way to work or trying to get back home, sometimes inert in your frustration in the throes of something akin to an existential crisis either peppered with expletives or suspended in silence.

But with just a few moments of planning ahead of time, the daily commute can be made easier. Arguably the best tool to plot out routes ahead of time is the weekly compilation by the Texas Department of Transportation alerting to portions of the artery slated for closure or lane reduction for construction work.

Such methodical pre-travel planning can save you time and frustration. And so, we bring you the latest batch of I-35 lane closures for Oct. 6-12. We can get through this, together.

But first, it's worth repeating that on Monday, Oct. 8, the southbound I-35 Oltorf Street exit (232A) was scheduled to permanently close. In its place will be the Woodland Avenue exit (232B) into the Woodland Avenue/Oltorf Street exit (232). This is, of course, if weather permits. On Saturday, a 50 percent chance of rainfall was being forecast so you never know.

Update: Heavy rain on Monday prompted transportation officials to cancel this project. Patch will update on when an alternative date for the project is determined.

Assuming Mother Nature cooperates, the exit closure will begin at 10 p.m. on Monday, when southbound I-35 will be reduced to one lane between the entrance ramp north of Woodland Avenue and the entrance ramp north of Oltorf Street. Construction crews will re-stripe, install new signage and place barrier for the ramp closure. Lanes are expected to reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday morning, Oct. 9, along with the new exit ramp.

If necessary, TxDot officials said, main lane closures will continue on Tuesday night at 10 p.m. to complete remaining work for the ramp change. Drivers wishing to access Oltorf Street will need to exit at the new Woodland Avenue/Oltorf Street exit ramp and travel through the signal at Woodland Avenue to Oltorf Street. Road signs will be placed to alert drivers of the changes and notify them to exit earlier.

Motorists also should take note of frontage road changes coming to I-35 at Rundberg Lane to U.S. 290 East. Crews will start utility work, sidewalk installation and northbound I-35 frontage road improvements between Rundberg Lane and US 183 on Wednesday evening, Oct. 10, weather permitting.

To safely perform the work, the frontage road will need to be reduced to two travel lanes and shifted to the west, transportation officials said. Temporary lanes have been constructed to accommodate the shift, TxDot officials added, and business driveways and access to side streets will remain open. The project team anticipates traffic to be in this configuration for approximately 18 months, weather permitting.

• Northbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed between Gattis School Rd and RM 620
  • From 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 12
• Southbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed between US 79 and RM 620

I-35 FROM RUNDBERG LANE TO US 290 EAST

• Powell Lane closed at I-35. Use Wonsley Drive
