Hurricane Harvey: Flooding Sparks Cancellation Of Classes Throughout Central Texas (Updates)

AUSTIN, TX — Flooding conditions due to Topical Storm Harvey have wreaked havoc on area roadways, making some impassable given high waters. Consequently, area school districts and colleges have canceled classes for parts of next week out of safety concerns.

As of Sunday, school districts in the immediate area—Austin ISD, Round Rock ISD, Leander ISD and others—have not announced closures. The Austin, Pflugerville and Round Rock school districts, however, have implemented two-hour delays for classes to resume on Monday.

While the National Weather Service has issued various advisories related to flooding and high winds, the conditions in Austin are not as severe given location on the cusp of what began as Hurricane Harvey, now a full-fledged tropical storm.

But in the outlying areas where Harvey's effects are being more acutely felt, various educational facilities have cancelled classes outright. Among them:

Austin Community College will open at 10 a.m. on Monday

Austin ISD – Two-hour delay for start of classes implemented

Bastrop ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

Elgin ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

Giddings ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

McDade ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

New Braunfels ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

Pflugerville ISD – Two-hour delay for start of classes implemented

Round Rock ISD – Two-hour delay for start of classes implemented

Smithville ISD – Classes canceled Aug. 28

Texas State University – Weekend events canceled; classes canceled at San Marcos and Round Rock campuses Aug. 28
