Hi, neighbors! It's me, Jessica Collins, your host of the Austin Daily. Let's get this Thursday started off right, with a quick dive into the most important things going on around town:
- Austin home prices are being slashed as the local real estate market cools.
- Residents evacuate homes as crews battle brush fire in East Austin.
- Local Black organizations host town halls on the state of Black education in Austin ISD.
- And much more ➡️

🍃 Grass Pollen: low. Ragweed: low. Mold: moderate. Dust & Dander: extremely high.
Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) Austin home prices are being slashed as the local real estate market cools. Realtor.com evaluated the 200 largest metro areas in the U.S. and calculated which had the highest percentage of home listings with price cuts in June. Austin ranks second on the list, right behind Reno, Nevada. Many homebuyers are pausing their efforts amidst higher mortgage rates and fears of recession. As a result, sellers are reacting to the decline in demand. KVUE has more on this story here.
2) Residents evacuate homes as crews battle brush fire in East Austin. Austin Fire Department is assisting Travis County ESD #12 and Travis County Fire Rescue in fighting a brush fire near FM 969 and Gilbert Road. According to officials, the fire has burned between 25 to 30 acres. Check out the full story on FOX 7 Austin.
3) Local Black organizations hosting town halls on the state of Black education in Austin ISD. The Austin Area Urban League, Black Leaders Collective, East Austin Coalition for Quality Education, and Austin Branch NAACP are hosting two emergency "State of Black Education" town hall meetings this week. These meetings will give families and community members an opportunity to voice concerns and develop solutions to address the educational disparities within the Black community. Learn more about this story here at KVUE.
4) Pedestrian killed after being struck by local train. A person has been hit by a CapMetro train in North Austin. Austin EMS and Austin Fire responded to the scene at 9000 Research Blvd. around 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 27. The individual died on the scene. Patch has more on this story here.
