AUSTIN, TX -- Carved jack-o'-lantern for Halloween, check. Bought plenty of candy for the visiting hordes, check. Got the hose ready in case the house gets egged if candy runs out, check. Marked the calendar for Oct. 31 when the International House of Pancakes will provide free flap jacks for the kids, what?

Yes, IHOP -- the home of pancakes of international appeal and global resonance -- will follow its tradition of free Scary Face pancakes of Halloween. Kids 12 and under can enjoy a free pancake from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at participating restaurants.

It gets better: Kids can create their own Scary Face pancake creations with the provided tools of the trade: one buttermilk pancake, whipped cream, a strawberry for a nose and a side of Oreo cookies and candy corn for added ornamentation and artistic complexity.
