Real-Life Los Pollos Hermanos Chicken Franchise Coming To Austin (Sort Of)

Construction permits filed with the city suggest a life-size storefront from the series 'Breaking Bad' will be among the SXSW attractions.

AUSTIN, TX — Call this Breaking (Bad) News: A life-size recreation of the Los Pollos Restaurant made famous by the AMC television drama Breaking Bad could be erected in a downtown parking lot for the upcoming South by Southwest Conference in the same spot where a Ferris wheel was built for the art festival's run.

The blog site called Austin Towers referenced city permits filed with the city last week showing plans for the temporary structure to be built for a private party. The fried chicken restaurant would be built near 122 West 5th St.

Actor Bob Odenkirk of the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul is scheduled as a featured speaker at the event. Those following the adventures of Saul know that the chicken restaurant/drug front operation will revisit the storefront that was virtually a character all its own in the spellbinding drama that preceded Better Caul Saul.

Tower notes that fans of Breaking Bad have petitioned for someone, anyone, to construct a Los Pollos Hermanos storefront. Come SXSW time, this wish could finally become a tangible reality, with plans for a 1,400 square-foot structure approved for A-2 occupancy classification (that's a restaurant) and a staging area for more than 500 people, according to Austin Towers.

Last year at the spot was a decidedly different (and literal) turn, with the 100-foot Ferris wheelerected at the site as part of an interaction exhibition promoting the USA television series Mr. Robot.
