Here are the top stories in Austin today:
- On Monday, May 30, "City of Austin government offices will be closed" for Memorial Day, but will resume normal operating hours on Tuesday, May 31. City of Austin officials encourage "Austinites and visitors to know how they are going to get home before they leave the house for the holiday and graduation celebrations, so they can get home safe." For holiday options, please visit austintexas.gov/gethomesafe and for questions or information regarding city services, please call 3-1-1 or submit your request from the Austin 3-1-1 mobile app. As you celebrate Memorial Day, please also take a moment to remember our heroes. - As Memorial Day preparations begin, "Austin Public Health (APH)" officials advise the community to take COVID-19 precautions, as an increase in COVID-19 cases has been reported "in Travis County." Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin-Travis County Health Authority, said, "We know how to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If we get boosted, celebrate outdoors when possible and wear masks indoors to protect those at risk, we can stop the current rise in cases." For details on the report and precautionary measures, please visit: (AustinTexas.gov)
- On Thursday, May 26, two Texas Women's Golf student-athletes placed "on the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America teams." The students are "freshman Bohyun Park, who earned second-team accolades" and "senior Sara Kouskova, who received honorable mention." This was "the sixth-straight year the Longhorns have had a member of the WGCA All-America teams and fifth time in-a-row with multiple selections." For more visit:(TexasSports.com)
- "To help end homelessness," the City of Austin "has committed $106.7 million of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) to advance" the city's "3-year goals established as part the Finding Home ATX initiative." Those goals are comprised of "a community-led initiative that brought a diverse group of organizations, community advocates, and issue area experts to develop a comprehensive plan to help end homelessness: Homelessness Services Capacity Building Program." - The Runners World+ (RW+) program is made up of "tight-knit community" of passionate runners and if you love running, you'll also love learning about the many benefits that you can receive by becoming a member!
