Here are the top stories in Austin today:
1) Police confirm the death of 22-year-old Texas A&M student Tanner Hoang, who went missing on graduation day. Hoang's family reported him missing after he missed lunch with them before the ceremony, and later learned he didn't meet graduation requirements. Hoang was reported deceased, after being found near the Pennybacker Bridge on Loop 360, in Austin. The Statesman has more on this heartbreaking story here.
2) A dead body was found at Lady Bird Lake on Christmas Day. It's currently unclear how long the body had been in the water. Austin Police Department confirmed it's too early to identify the person or determine what caused their death. KXAN has more on this developing story here.
3) Austin Police say a 42-year-old man is in custody in connection with a string of robberies across the city. KXAN reports: "Police accuse Carmona of robbing an America's Best Contacts and Eyeglasses store and an Amazing Lash Studio in central Austin, a Cricket Wireless store and Domino's Pizza in east Austin, a Boost Mobile store and Circle K in southeast Austin, and a Murphy gas station in south Austin." 4) Did you know: The City of Austin has the ambitious goal of diverting 90% of waste from local landfills and incinerators by 2040? Community Impact reports: "Last year the deferral rate was 41.96%. Currently, about 15% of recycling ends up in a landfill. However, the biggest issue with contamination is that it can cause safety issues for the people who sort recycling." Community Impact has compiled a cheat sheet to make sure we all feel more comfortable with our recycling and trash disposal knowledge and can play our part and reducing our overall waste – check it out.
