Nearly 2 Dozen Travis County Schools Get 'F' For Performance

Children at Risk releases annual rankings showing 12 elementary, 10 middle and one high school failed to meet performance requirements.

AUSTIN, TX — A dozen elementary schools, 10 middle schools and one high school in Travis County failed to meet state performance requirements, according to a 2019 ranking from Children at Risk.

The group ranks Texas public schools as a guide for parents, educations and the public in yielding a snapshot on how schools are performing, according to its website. To that aim, the group assigns each school a grade from A to F in assessing that performance.

Given the group's reckoning, a dozen elementary schools in Travis County received a letter grade of F, 1/3 of those from Del Valle ISD:

  • Creedmore Elementary of the Del Valle Independent School District.
  • Popham Elementary, Del Valle ISD.
  • Wooldridge Elementary, Austin ISD.
  • Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary, Del Valle ISD.
  • Pickle Elementary, Austin ISD.
  • Northwest Elementary, Pflugerville ISD.
  • Harris Elementary, Austin ISD.
  • Residential Meadows, El Manor ISD.
  • Hillcrest Elementary, Del Valle ISD.
  • Altamira Academy, Wayside Schools.
  • Widen Elementary, Austin ISD.
  • Oak Springs Elementary, Austin ISD.

Conversely, one Travis ISD school made it onto the list of top 100 schools with a grade of A+. Lake Pointe Elementary of Lake Travis ISD was the highest-ranked school in Travis County in the 91st overall ranking, according to the findings. Several schools in run by the Round Rock ISD in Williamson County ranked highly, topped by Canyon Creek Elementary in the 12th overall ranking in Texas.

In addition, 10 Travis County middle schools were given an F grade:

  • Decker Middle School, Manor ISD.
  • Dobie Middle School Austin ISD.
  • Sadler Means YWLA, Austin ISD.
  • Burnet Middle School, Austin ISD.
  • Webb Middle School, Austin ISD.
  • Martin Middle School, Austin ISD.
  • Mendez Middle School, Austin ISD.
  • Manor Middle School, Manor ISD.
  • Carpe Diem School, Carpe Diem Schools.

The sole high school in Travis County receiving a grade of F was John B. Connally Hight School run by the Pflugerville ISD.

Broken down on a granular level, the top-performing elementary schools in Central Texas were:

  1. LASA H S – AUSTIN ISD
  2. CHAPARRAL STAR ACADEMY
  3. RICHARDS SCH FOR YOUNG WOMEN LEADE AUSTIN ISD
  4. WESTLAKE H S EANES ISD
  5. BOWIE H S – AUSTIN ISD
  6. WESTWOOD H S ROUND ROCK ISD
  7. GATEWAY COLLEGE PREPARATORY SCHOOL ORENDA CHARTER SCHOOL
  8. MERIDIAN WORLD SCHOOL LLC – MERIDIAN WORLD SCHOOL
  9. NYOS CHARTER SCHOOL – NYOS CHARTER SCHOOL
  10. HARMONY SCHOOL OF ENDEAVOR – AUSTIN HARMONY SCIENCE ACADEMY (AUSTIN)

Schools are assigned ranks and grades based on student achievement on standardized tests, student growth year-to-year, and how well schools support economically disadvantaged students, researchers explained in their report. High Schools are also evaluated on how well they prepare students for college and career, analysts added.
