Here are the top stories today in Austin:
- This week the new 15,000-seat Moody Center in Austin will officially open and "debut to the public on Wednesday, April 20, and Thursday, April 21, with its first concerts from John Mayer," future concerts and Texas Longhorns basketball games. The project, which cost $338 million, includes developers "University of Texas at Austin, Live Nation Entertainment/C3 Presents, the Oak View Group (OVG) and Matthew McConaughey." The new center located on Robert Dedman Drive "is surrounded by 200-year-old oak trees that were relocated during construction and are now planted around the Dell Technologies Plaza." The venue, which has "murals and neon designs by local artists," is cashless with "self-check-out concessions" and has "numerous premium spaces." Although "suites and club memberships have been sold out" since March, "fans can join a waitlist for future premium experiences." - As "part of an effort to create more affordable housing options for students," construction of a new graduate student housing building on the University of Texas east campus is set to begin soon and be completed by fall 2024. According to UT officials, "the plan for this graduate student housing area is part of the 2015 East Campus Master Plan." The new building "will be located at 21 Street between Comal and Leona streets," and will feature "784 beds in studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom layouts," as well as "public courtyards, an outdoor classroom, an amphitheater, a fitness center and study spaces." UT President Jay Hartzell said, "I am grateful for our ongoing conversations with the Blackland Neighborhood Association, and I am excited to collaborate as we go forward so our graduate students are both contributing to and benefiting from the vibrancy of the neighborhood."
