Hey, people of Austin! It's me again, Gabriela Couvillion, your host of the Austin Daily.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 75 Low: 45.

Here are the top stories in Austin today:

  1. On Tuesday, Jan. 11, Westlakes High School announced that Tony Salazar will be "the new head coach at Austin (TX) Westlake." The former head coach, Todd Dodge, "retired from his post at the end of the 2021 season after capturing the seventh state championship of his coaching career." Salazar said, per the Austin Statesman, "I've had offers from other schools to leave Westlake and become a head coach somewhere else. Something always kept me here." 2. Due to the surge of COVID-19 omicron cases, Meals on Wheels of Central Texas had to change the date of daily meal deliveries from Monday, Jan. 24 to Friday, Jan. 28, on which day they will deliver 3 weeks' worth of meals. The change was due to the fact that many "clients have underlying medical conditions which can make them particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 complications" and so they want to keep "clients and volunteers healthy and safe." For now, Meals on Wheels "will continue monitoring local public health developments as it reviews future plans." For more information, visit: (KEYE TV CBS Austin)
  3. Bojangles Southeast fried chicken restaurant may soon be coming to Austin! The company plans to open 50 locations in Texas, with five of those in the Austin area. Although they have not announced an exact opening date, "according to the Austin Business Journal, they will have three investment partners and a restaurant operator for their Austin projects." 4. This past weekend, Gov. Greg Abbott officially announced "that he'll be running to keep his role as the leader of Texas" along with 12 others who plan to run for the position. "Do you think you know all the candidates, and which party they're in?" Take the following quiz to find out: (KXAN.com)
  5. The 2022 Don't mess with Texas® Scholarship Contest, sponsored by Buc-ees and iHeart Media, is now taking applications. The contest is open to Texas high school seniors currently in public, private or home school who plan to attend an accredited Texas college or university in fall 2022. A total of $9,000 in scholarships will be awarded in May 2022, and winners will be selected based on their "proven results in leading projects or events focused on educating communities about the importance of keeping our state clean and litter-free."
