Nurse Michael Angel Is Mentor to New Nurses

Dell Children's nurse receives School of Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award

Michael Angel-Breaux is described by his colleagues as the best example of someone who goes above and beyond for his patients, families and his Dell Children’s Medical Center team. He has faced countless challenges in recent years but continues to rise to every challenge with compassion, determination and grace. He recently received the St. David’s School of Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award, after being nominated by his peers.

Throughout Michael's nursing career, he has held many roles. Starting as an RN resident in July 2020, he quickly excelled and became a leader on the unit. He is a primary preceptor, sharing his love for teaching and education with 10 or more orientees throughout his time. Michael serves Dell Children’s by heading up the Morale Committee and Skin Champion team. When there was a gap in the unit schedule and a charge nurse was needed, Michael quickly rose to the occasion and was charge-trained the same week. He also volunteered to be the 3 North education liaison and help out with the residency program, scheduling and classes.

Recently, Michael was asked to take on an education role. Michael not only stepped up to the plate, but he quickly created templates, schedules and a new curriculum. He reached out to every new nurse resident and patient care technician to introduce himself and get their orientation onboarding started. He also set up meetings with other units to help train new interim educators in those units, for the benefit of the hospital as a whole.

Michael takes care of not only the patient, but all family members and visitors too. Recently, he was recognized for calming a parent who was having a panic attack. He sat on the bathroom floor with her and held her child so that she could have a break. He ultimately encouraged her to seek the medical help she needed, where they discovered that she did have a medical problem and needed emergent help.

Michael is absolutely the definition of the Dell Children's Difference and certainly is deserving of the Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award. Congratulations, Michael!
