Pedestrian Standing On Highway Killed By Car: Austin Police

Police are unsure why the victim, a man in his 50s, was standing on the roadway before being struck and killed by a passing car.

AUSTIN, TX — A pedestrian who was standing in a highway this week was killed by a passing motorist, police said.

The incident occurred along the 12000 block of South Interstate 35 southbound when a silver Mercedes-Benz struck the pedestrian, an unidentified man in his 50s, according to police. Detectives are unsure why the man was standing in the highway before he died at the scene.

Police later identified the man killed as 49-year-old Cecil Wade Walker. Police noted the driver stayed at the scene for police to arrive, and cooperated with their investigation. No charges are expected to be filed against the motorist, police added.

The incident is the 35th fatal traffic in Austin so far this year, resulting in 36 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, police added, there were 25 fatal traffic crashes and 26 traffic fatalities.
