Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Car In South Austin Identified

Juan Palacios, 55, was with a companion while crossing a dark street two weekends ago before he was fatally hit by a truck.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday identified the pedestrian who was killed after being struck by a car two weekends ago in South Austin.

The incident dates to Saturday, Jan. 18, just before 11 p.m. along the 4700 block of Burleson Road. Police learned the driver of a gray, 2005 Ford F-150 was traveling westbound along the 4700 block of Burleson Road when a pair of pedestrians walked into the vehicle's path.

One of those pedestrians, 55-year-old Juan Palacios, was struck. He was transported to St. David's South Austin Medical Center, police said, but succumbed to his injuries eight days later. Police noted the area where Palacios and his companion were crossing was dark, and there are no crosswalks in the area.

The driver of the truck presumably stayed on the scene to cooperate with the police investigation, as police noted no charges are expected to be filed.

The incident marked the 8th fatal traffic crash of 2020 in Austinan equal number of fatalities. There were three fatal traffic accidents in the comparable period in 2019, police added.
