Police ID Man Killed After Slamming Car Into Utility Pole

Vehicle traveling southbound along Interstate 35 hit utility pole, injuring passenger and driver, who succumbed to injuries 12 days later.

AUSTIN, TX — Police on Friday identified the man who died days after slamming his vehicle into a light pole in the early morning hours last month.

According to a preliminary police investigation, a silver, 2004 Dodge Durgano was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes along Interstate 35 when the vehicle struck the utility pole. The driver, Carlos Asteven Alvarez-Recarte, 24, and his passenger were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment, police said in a press advisory.

Alvarez-Recarte succumbed to his injuries 12 days later, on Oct. 4, police said.

The incident marked Austin’s 65th fatal traffic crash of 2019, resulting in 67 fatalities this year. At this time in 2018, police added, there were 53 fatal traffic crashes and 54 traffic fatalities.
