Machete-Wielding Suspect Arrested In South Austin

Police arrested a man who was accused of threatening family members with a machete before fleeing to a second home where he was holed up.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — A man accused of threatening family members with a machete was arrested in southeast Austin following a police standoff, officials said on Tuesday.

The incident began just before 11:20 a.m. along the 3600 block of South 2nd Street, Officer Destiny Silva told reporters in an afternoon press conference about two-and-a-half hours later. Upon arrival, police officers learned the man had fled to a second location along the 2200 block of Dove Springs Road, Silva said.

When cops reached the second location, officers were compelled to secure a SWAT team for assistance after the man failed to comply with orders to exit the home. Silva explained the SWAT team was called after police learned the man might have access to weapons at the house.

A short time later, however, the man exited the building before being arrested without incident. The suspect was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/family violence. No injuries were reported.
