Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) Former Travis County deputy pleads guilty to a triple homicide. On Tuesday, former Travis County sheriff's detective Stephen Broderick pleaded guilty to the capital murder of three people (his ex-wife, daughter, and daughter's boyfriend). The prosecution agreed to waive the death penalty in exchange for a life in prison without parole penalty. KVUE has more on this story here.
2) Access to affordable and nutritious food continues to be a growing problem for many in the Austin area. The newly published "2022 State of the Food System" report shows that 14.4 percent of people in Travis County are currently experiencing food insecurity. That rate has increased from 12.8 percent in 2019 to 17 percent in 2020.
As a step further than the report, Austin's sustainability office plans to create the city's first-ever Food Plan. It will gather input from the community and stakeholders to document their voices and create a set of recommendations for moving forward. Head to KXAN to learn more about this story.
3) An Austinite is $5 million richer after winning the top prize from a scratch lottery ticket! The local resident claimed the top prize-winning ticket of $5 million in the Texas Lottery scratch ticket game "Casino Millions." This winning ticket was purchased at the Star Stop 75, which is located at 5801 N. Interstate 35. Congrats to the lucky winner! KVUE has more on this story.
4) Robotaxis coming to Austin? The future is here, neighbors! General Motors announced on Monday that they're planning to expand a robotaxi service that recently launched in California into new markets in Arizona and Texas. Cruise, a San Francisco startup that General Motors bought six years ago, told an audience at a conference that an autonomous ride-hailing service that began charging San Francisco passengers in June will make its debut in Phoenix and Austin, within the next 90 days.
