School Of Rock To Open 2nd Site In South Austin

The music school at 9600 Interstate 35 will have a grand opening on Saturday in an afternoon filled with music and giveaways.

SOUTH AUSTIN, TX — The School of Rock music school will host a grand opening this weekend in South Austin.

Described as a leader in performance-based music education, the school at 9600 Interstate 35, Suite I-100, is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. Along with a ceremonial guitar smashing (School of Rock’s version of a ribbon-cutting), the afternoon filled with performances from both local bands and School of Rock house bands, a Fender guitar giveaway, free ice cream, face painting, and more, officials said.

School of Rock Southwest Austin is owned and operated by Kimberly Durham and Bob Durham, who also own and operate School of Rock Round Rock. The team said they witnessed the positive impact of the Frisco school and knew they wanted to continue to grow their business. With Austin known as the live music capital of the world and one of the country’s biggest music destinations, the city was a natural for the music school expansion with its second site.

“We’re very excited to open a School of Rock in the Southwest Austin community," Alex Vallejo, Director of Operations for School of Rock Southwest Austin, said in a prepared statement. "This new school is in the Southpark Meadows shopping center, where iconic bands like Pearl Jam and Metallica used to perform, making it the perfect place to open our school. We plan to do a lot of fun and interactive events to continue spreading School of Rock’s initiatives and make an impact on our students' lives. We’re ready to make some noise.”

Officials said School of Rock provides students of all ages an exciting and engaging music lesson experience, which includes guitar lessons, singing lessons, drum lessons and piano lessons. Drawing from all styles of rock and roll, School of Rock students learn theory and techniques via songs from legendary artists such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, and Frank Zappa. Thanks to the school’s performance-based approach, students around the world have gained superior musical proficiency, with some moving on to record deals and larger platforms such as American Idol, The Voice and Broadway.
