Austin New Year's Events: 2018 Guide
In the waning days of 2017, Patch started sending out requests to restaurants for a sneak peek at their special holiday fare. We've been updating our compilation ever since, and invite other restaurateurs to contact us to be added to the list. For good measure, we've compiled a list of the city's most popular Chinese restaurants, because it's a big tradition for some to eat this cuisine on Christmas Day and/or New Year's Eve.
While this list is hardly definitive, it might give you a taste (pun intended) of the range of holiday fare offered by area restaurateurs for that special holiday meal. Make sure to call ahead for reservations if needed.
So, behold of the best holiday fare in the Austin area. Happy holidays and bon appétit!

CHINESE FOOD FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Historians aren't sure how the holiday tradition of eating Chinese food began, but it's an immensely popular and growing activity. For more than a century, Jewish families in particular have headed to their favorite Chinese restaurant for their special holiday meal.
Jennifer 8. Lee, producer of “The Search for General Tso,” once suggested to The Atlantic the tradition is rooted in solidarity. As the two largest immigrant groups at the turn of the last century that weren’t Christian, Chinese and Jewish people shared the feeling of being "outsiders," according to the widely shared theory. The Chinese welcomed Jewish immigrants to their eateries, and members of the latter diaspora felt welcomed and embraced.
“Jewish people could go into Chinese restaurants and feel safe,” Lee explained to First We Feast. “And during the 1920s, Chinese food was exotic and cosmopolitan, so the way to impress a girl was to go grab some chop suey.”
In that spirit of such solidarity, here are some of the most popular Chinese restaurants in Austin:
A+A Sichuan, 13376 Research Blvd. 512-258-5445, aasichuanchina.com. Open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Chinatown West, 2712 Bee Cave Road. 512-328-6588, austinchinatown.com. Open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Chinatown MoPac, 3407 Greystone Drive. 512-343-9307, chinatown-mopac.com. Open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Din Ho Chinese BBQ, 8557 Research Blvd. 512-832-8788, dinhochinesebbq.com. Open regular hours on Christmas Eve, visit website or call for Christmas Day hours.
First Chinese Barbecue, 10901 N. Lamar Blvd. 512-835-8889, firstchinesebbq.com. Open regular hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
