Think less Botox and fillers, more “trial separation from the Austin Convention Center.” With the Convention Center closed for renovations until 2029, SXSW is reshaping itself with a new footprint, schedule, and access rules.

SXSW Turns 40

SXSW opened in 1987 as a music festival. It expanded quickly, bringing in tech and film along the way and giving countless unsigned musicians a stage long before anyone knew their names.

Now, 40 years later, SXSW is celebrating its milestone birthday by bringing all programming — Innovation, Film & TV, and Music — into the same seven‑day window for the first time ever.

This is the festival’s “let’s cram everything into one week” era (t‑shirts, anyone?). It’s a tighter, more intentional format designed to work around the Convention Center closure while still delivering the full SXSW experience.

The New SXSW "Clubhouse" Model

One of the biggest shifts for 2026 is the introduction of three physical hubs, or "clubhouses", designed to help attendees navigate a more spread‑out downtown footprint.

New Reservation System

Badgeholders can now lock in their sessions, screenings, and showcases up to three weeks early, a welcome change that should help with those classic SXSW lines now curling around buildings that weren’t even there the last time you wandered downtown.

Wristbands now replace the old secondary‑access system. If you want to attend events outside your badge track, you’ll need the matching wristband.
