Hey, people of Austin! Gabriela Couvillion here with the latest edition of the Austin Daily.
First, today's weather:
Warm; breezy in the afternoon. High: 96 Low: 71.
Here are the top stories in Austin today:
- Lily Dashner from Austin wouldn't be here if it weren't for a group of firefighters who saved her life when she was born 18 years ago. It was 2003 when her mother, Crystal Webb, gave birth to Lily at home and although she thought the baby was dead, she was actually in cardiac arrest. Recently Lily was able to meet once again with two of the firefighters who saved her life that day, Capt. Edward Roel and Capt. Brandon Jennings, who met with her at a fire station in South Austin. Her mother said, "What they do matters, and it makes a huge difference in people's lives. I am sure that my daughter would not be here today if it weren't for people showing up to help us when we needed it." Lily added, "If this never happened to me, I would not be as strong as I am today and would not have pushed myself as hard as I have." Firefighter Roel said, "It was one of those calls that just kind of stuck with us for a long time, and still does." For more on this inspirational story please visit: (FOX 7 Austin)
- "To save 50+ dogs and cars from euthanasia," Austin-based Wondercide will fund and participate in "its second annual Texas-based pet rescue flight" in partnership with "Dog Is My CoPilot (DIMC), Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), Matt Beisner of "Dog: Impossible" and other rescue organizations." Dog is My CoPilot nonprofit "transports at-risk animals from overcrowded shelters to adoption centers in other geographic regions." DIMC "founded by Peter E. Rork, a retired orthopedic surgeon and lifelong pilot, is an organization that "has flown almost 22,000 pets to safety." Wondercide, which was founded in 2009, protects "pets, people, and homes from pests like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes with safe, plant-powered, proven-to-work solutions." Its products contain "natural essential oils," and the woman-founded company is "eco-conscious and made in the USA."
